NEWS AND TRAFFIC IMPACTS PAGE

MORE LANES, MORE OPTIONS!

MORE LANES:
UDOT is working to improve the transportation system along the vital 3500 South corridor in West Valley City. This project will expand the roadway from two to three lanes in each direction to relieve congestion and improve safety for motorists.

MORE OPTIONS: In addition, UDOT will partner with the Utah Transit Authority to build a Bus Rapid Transit lane in the center of 3500 South project.

Project Web site: www.udot.utah.gov/3500south

General Overview:

  • Work began early November 2008.
  • Project completion is scheduled for July 2010. However, the contractor has been offered an incentive to finish earlier.

Construction Activity Update 12/3/09:

The following are planned activities for this week. Please note that due to weather conditions, emergency situations, or equipment/supply issues, schedules are subject to change.

TRAFFIC INFORMATION:

The 3500 South project is substantially complete and all travel lanes, turn lanes and business accesses are open.  Crews are completing miscellaneous clean-up work off the roadway with minimal traffic impacts.

Temporary paint striping has been placed to mark travel lanes.  Permanent tape striping and pavement markings will be installed in spring 2010.  Decorative street lighting will be installed by the city in early 2010.

  •  3500 South Open for Business
    • 3500 South Open For Business - 3500 South is open for business.  The public is encouraged to use the new roadway and patronize local businesses.

  • Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Lanes
    • Lanes (one lane in each direction) in the center median of 3500 South are dedicated lanes for UTA’s BRT (MAX bus) service.  Only busses are allowed in these lanes.
    • BRT lanes are separated from general purpose travel lanes with concrete curbing and double yellow paint lines.
    • It is illegal to cross the double yellow lines and curbing into the BRT lanes.  Driving in these lanes presents a serious safety hazard to motorists.
    • Law enforcement is monitoring and issuing citations for violations.  Motorists are advised to follow pavement markings for the safety of themselves and fellow drivers.
    • UTA expects MAX bus service to resume along 3500 South by early 2010.  The new bus lanes will be used at that time.

  • Landscape Restoration
    • Many businesses and property owners along 3500 South have been compensated by UDOT to restore landscaping features to meet city ordinance.
    • Property owners who have questions about city requirements for restoring landscaping may contact Jody Knapp in the Community and Economic Development Department (801-963-3497 or Jody.Knapp@wvc-ut.gov).

  • 40 MPH Speed Limit - The speed limit along 3500 South has been restored to the original 40 mph.  Law enforcement is closely monitoring speeds.

  • Left-Turn Lanes Open - Left-turns are open at all signalize intersections between BAngerter Highway and 2700 West.

  • Pedestrians - New sidewalks are open.  Pedestrians are encouraged to continue to use caution as crews are still working on miscellaneous clean-up items in various areas.

  • UTA TRAX Construction -  2700 West (Constitution Blvd.), 3100 South to 3500 South
    • Construction is underway on the Utah Transit Authority’s West Valley TRAX line.
